LBD is one of the most common types of progressive brain diseases, and the second leading cause, after Alzheimer’s disease, of degenerative dementia in older adults. LBD occurs when Lewy bodies, abnormal round structures of alpha-synuclein protein, develop in the areas of the brain that control thinking and movement. Symptoms include progressive cognitive decline and problems with motor function as well as fluctuations in attention and visual hallucinations.

The importance of early diagnosis:



The symptoms of LBD can mimic those of both Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. LBD can occur in combination with these diseases, making an accurate diagnosis difficult. Many medications used to treat Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s symptoms can have an adverse effect on people with LBD, so an accurate diagnosis is critical.
