Serenity Garden Plan Project Update
Fundraising is underway for the Serenity Garden which will replace our existing lower level patio. Gardens are always special places, and the new Sherrill House Serenity Garden will enable all of our residents, their families and our staff to enjoy the natural world in a safe and secure environment. A central feature of the garden will be a customized walking loop for persons with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. This brick pathway will be wide enough to accommodate two wheelchairs at any point, and will begin and end at an entryway designed to resemble a home-style front porch, complete with faux windows and container plantings. Wheelchair-accessible raised beds will enable residents of all abilities to experience the pleasure of working in the soil. Plantings throughout the garden will include a variety of lush, rich specimens that offer stimulation to all the senses, not just sight and smell. These will include a complement of herbs, grasses, flowers, and shrubs selected to withstand the elements and bloom throughout the season, and this tranquil landscape will be visible from windows throughout the building. In addition, benches will be placed at natural stopping points along the walkway, to encourage relaxation and contemplation. In addition, lighting will be added to promote evening activities and visits. An underground sprinkler system will help us to maintain the garden throughout the summer months.
