A New Destination for Special Care Unit Residents: the Country Kitchen
It’s said that the kitchen is the heart of the home. Certainly, it’s a place that evokes vivid and powerful memories of preparing food, doing chores and caring for our loved ones. And because the familiarity of a kitchen can be especially comforting for persons afflicted with dementia, Sherrill House has designed a new space for our Special Care Unit residents. Our brand new, hands-on country kitchen features an expansive set of cabinets and drawers that residents can explore. The cabinets are filled with dishes, food boxes, linens and household supplies, all of which are made of safe materials so that residents can use them freely. There’s a laundry area with a basket of clothes for folding and organizing, a table and chairs to encourage dining activities and visiting, and a high chair with life-like “babies” so that residents can pamper their young ones. There’s even a selection of coupons and store flyers that residents can sort and organize.

The kitchen is always open to any resident who wants to stop by and explore, and will appeal especially to those who might prefer not to participate in group activities. And while residents will find many ways to “work” independently in this therapeutic space, groups will gather there as well for tea parties, baking and household tasks. Our cozy country kitchen is sure to elicit memories from our residents’ pasts, and will provide a safe place where they can engage in a wide range of meaningful experiences that are both stimulating and comforting in their familiarity.
And soon, residents will be able to enjoy a front-porch style sitting area, which is currently under construction. Designed for relaxation, visiting and reminiscence, the porch will feature window boxes with faux plantings that residents can change seasonally, and seating for individuals and groups. More details will follow in the weeks ahead!
